Digital SAT vs Paper SAT: Complete Comparison for 2026
SAT Clarity Editorial ·
The standard SAT moved to digital delivery internationally in 2023 and in the United States in 2024. Paper testing remains available for certain approved accommodations, so ‘paper SAT abolished’ is too broad.
Timing and question count
The standard digital test has 98 questions and 134 minutes of testing, plus a 10-minute break. Reading and Writing has two 32-minute modules of 27 questions each. Math has two 35-minute modules of 22 questions each.
Adaptive modules and scores
Each section begins with a mix of question difficulties. Performance in that module influences the difficulty mix in the second module. There is no published universal routing percentage or simple raw-percentage conversion that accurately produces an SAT score.
Scores use both modules and characteristics of the questions. Work carefully throughout the test rather than treating the first few questions as specially weighted.
Reading, writing, and calculator use
Reading and Writing uses short passages or passage pairs with one question per item. Math permits a calculator throughout, including the embedded Desmos calculator. Some Math questions require a student-produced response rather than a multiple-choice selection.
Accommodations and School Day exceptions
Approved accommodations may change timing, breaks, or test format. Some SAT School Day programs include an Essay. Follow your registration and school instructions rather than assuming the standard Weekend format applies to everyone.
