The Digital SAT comes with a built-in Desmos graphing calculator inside the Bluebook app. Used well, Desmos can solve some problems in seconds. Used poorly, it slows you down. Here is the practical guide to making it work for you.
What Is Desmos and Why It Matters
Desmos is a free online graphing calculator widely used in classrooms. The College Board partnered with Desmos to embed a fully functional version inside Bluebook. It is available throughout both Math modules.
Why it matters: certain SAT Math questions become 10-second problems with Desmos that would take 2 minutes on paper. Knowing when to reach for Desmos is a real time-saver.

When to Use Desmos vs Paper
Use Desmos for: graphing functions, finding intersections, solving systems visually, checking a paper-derived answer, and any question with a chart or graph.
Skip Desmos for: simple arithmetic (3 + 4 = 7), basic algebra you can solve in 10 seconds mentally, and questions where typing the equation takes longer than solving it.

Graphing Equations in Desmos
Type any equation into the input bar (left side of Desmos). Desmos automatically graphs it. Common formats: 'y = 2x + 3,' 'x^2 + y^2 = 25,' 'sin(x).'
Multiple equations graph simultaneously, each in a different color. This is incredibly useful for systems of equations and comparison problems.
Finding Intersections in Seconds
When two graphs intersect, Desmos marks the intersection points automatically. Click the intersection to see exact coordinates. This is the fastest way to solve any 'where do these two equations meet' question.
Example: 'For what value of x does y = 2x + 1 equal y = -x + 7?' Type both equations, click the intersection, get x = 2 in 5 seconds.
Any question asking 'where do two equations meet' can be solved in 5 seconds with Desmos intersections.
Solving Systems of Equations Visually
Type all equations in the system. Look at where they intersect. Single intersection point = one solution. Parallel lines = no solution. Same line = infinite solutions.
This visual approach is faster than algebra for verifying answers, especially on harder system questions.
Using Sliders to Test Variables
Type an equation with a variable parameter, like 'y = mx + 3.' Desmos asks if you want to add a slider for m. Yes — the slider lets you change m and watch the graph update in real time.
This is powerful for 'for which value of k does this system have no solution' questions. Slide k until the graph shows the right behavior.
Tables and Statistical Calculations
Desmos has a table function for entering data sets. It calculates mean, median, standard deviation, and other statistics automatically. Useful for the Problem Solving and Data Analysis section.
Type the table values, then use functions like 'mean(L1)' or 'median(L1)' to get statistics in seconds.
Common Desmos Mistakes
Mistake 1: typing equations slowly because the syntax is unfamiliar — practice in advance. Mistake 2: forgetting to clear previous equations between questions. Mistake 3: using Desmos when paper would be faster.
Mistake 4: trusting Desmos for complex multi-step word problems where typing the setup eats time. Use Desmos for the calculation step only, not for translating the word problem.

Building Desmos Fluency in Practice
Spend at least 2 hours practicing with Desmos before test day. The free desmos.com website is identical to the Bluebook version. Practice typing equations quickly, finding intersections, and using sliders until each feels automatic.

Backup Calculator Recommendations
Even with Desmos built in, bring an approved physical calculator as backup. The TI-84 Plus, TI-Nspire CX, and Casio fx-CG50 are all approved and reliable.
