Here is the secret almost nobody tells you: the SAT tests a small, predictable set of math topics. Once you know the buckets and how often each shows up, your study plan basically writes itself.

What the Digital SAT Math Actually Tests

The Digital SAT Math section has 44 questions split across two adaptive modules. Topics fall into four categories: Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Advanced Math, and Geometry & Trigonometry.

Algebra and Advanced Math together make up 70% of your score. If you only had time to master two areas, those would be the ones to pick.

Algebra (35%)

This category covers linear equations, linear inequalities, and systems of two linear equations. You will solve for variables, interpret the slope and intercept of a line in context, and decide whether two systems have one solution, no solution, or infinitely many.

Practice tip: most Algebra questions can be solved in under 60 seconds once you recognize the pattern. Drill until you can identify the pattern in 5 seconds — slope question, system of equations, interpretation question.

For 'no solution' systems, the equations have the same slope but different intercepts.

Problem Solving and Data Analysis (15%)

This category covers ratios, percentages, unit conversions, and reading data from tables, graphs, and scatterplots. You may also see questions about mean, median, mode, range, and standard deviation comparisons.

Practice tip: read the chart axes and units before reading the question. Most mistakes here come from misreading the data, not from doing the math wrong.

Advanced Math (35%)

This is where quadratics, exponentials, polynomials, and function notation live. You will factor quadratics, find roots, evaluate functions like f(g(x)), and work with exponential growth and decay.

Practice tip: build fluency with both factoring and the quadratic formula. Some quadratics factor cleanly; others do not. Knowing both methods saves real time on test day.

Memorize: a² - b² = (a + b)(a - b). It shows up in disguise on at least one question per test.

Geometry and Trigonometry (15%)

Mostly area and volume formulas, the Pythagorean theorem, similar triangles, and basic right-triangle trig (SOH-CAH-TOA). The reference sheet inside Bluebook gives you most volume and area formulas, but speed matters — knowing them cold saves seconds.

Practice tip: memorize the 3-4-5, 5-12-13, and 8-15-17 Pythagorean triples and the 30-60-90 and 45-45-90 special triangle ratios. They appear constantly.

How to Use the Built-In Desmos Calculator

Desmos is genuinely powerful — it can graph any function, find intersections, solve systems visually, and let you use sliders to test scenarios. For graph-heavy questions, type the equations in and look at the picture.

But Desmos is not always faster. For simple algebra (3x + 7 = 22), pencil and paper beat typing. The skill is knowing when to reach for Desmos versus when to just solve.

Common Math Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Sign errors top the list. Whenever you distribute or move a term across the equals sign, write the new sign clearly. The second most common: solving for x when the question asks for 2x or x + 3. Always re-read what is being asked before circling.

Third on the list: skipping the units check. If the question gives you minutes and asks for hours, the conversion is the trick — not the math. Underline units when they appear.

Math Practice Schedule for 4 Weeks

Week 1: full diagnostic + identify your two weakest categories. Week 2: 30 minutes daily on weak category 1, 15 minutes review. Week 3: 30 minutes daily on weak category 2, 15 minutes review. Week 4: full timed module + targeted drills on remaining gaps.

Track accuracy per category in a simple notebook. By week 4, both your weakest categories should be at 80%+ accuracy on medium difficulty.

When to Memorize Formulas vs Derive Them

Memorize: quadratic formula, slope formula, distance formula, area of triangle, area of circle, volume of cylinder, Pythagorean theorem, sin/cos/tan ratios. These are too common to derive every time.

Derive: less common volume formulas (sphere, cone) — they are on the reference sheet, so save the memory space for high-frequency formulas.

Math improvement is the most predictable section to grow. The topics are finite, the patterns repeat, and good practice produces real gains. Pick one weak category this week and spend 20 minutes on it daily.
