25 Proven SAT Tips and Strategies

SAT Clarity Editorial ·

Most 'SAT tip' lists are filler. Here are 25 tips that have actually moved scores in our students — practical, specific, and ranked roughly by impact.

Before Test Day

The 48 hours before the SAT matter more than the 48 days before. Sleep 8 hours both nights. Don't study new material the day before — only review. Pack your laptop, ID, and snacks the night before. Eat breakfast on test morning even if you're not hungry. Arrive 15 minutes early to settle in.

Reading & Writing Tips (1–10)

1) Read the passage once carefully — don't skim. 2) Underline the question's key words. 3) Predict the answer before looking at choices. 4) For vocabulary, plug each choice back into the sentence. 5) For transitions, identify the relationship (cause, contrast, addition) before picking. 6) For evidence questions, the right quote PROVES the claim — not just relates to it. 7) Eliminate two clearly wrong choices first. 8) When two choices feel close, find the one tiny difference. 9) Pace yourself — about 70 seconds per question. 10) Never leave a question blank — guess if needed.

Math Tips (11–20)

11) Underline what the question is ACTUALLY asking for. 12) Write your work — don't do it in your head. 13) Use the Desmos graphing calculator when stuck. 14) For 'which of the following' questions, plug in answer choices. 15) For word problems, translate one phrase at a time into algebra. 16) For data questions, read axes labels first. 17) Don't second-guess after you've done the math correctly. 18) Skip and come back to time-eaters — pacing matters. 19) Re-check your arithmetic on the last step. 20) Look for tricky negatives, especially squared expressions.

The single highest-impact Math tip: underline what's being asked before you start solving.

General Test-Taking Tips (21–25)

21) Bubble (or click) every answer — no penalty for wrong. 22) When stuck, narrow to two and pick — don't agonize. 23) Move through Module 1 well — the adaptive system rewards strong starts. 24) Use the full time per module if possible — re-check your answers. 25) After the test, walk away. Don't post-mortem. The score is set.

The Most Powerful Strategy: Study Your Mistakes

Of every strategy on this list, the one that moves scores the most is also the most boring: review your wrong answers, deeply, after every practice session. Spend ten minutes per session doing this and you'll improve roughly twice as fast as students who just keep drilling.

10 minutes of deep mistake review beats 30 minutes of new questions. Every time.
