When to Take the SAT: Best Test Dates for 2026-2027

Plan your SAT date around readiness, school commitments, registration deadlines, and the score deadlines of your own colleges. Dates below were checked against College Board on September 16, 2026.
SAT Weekend dates for 2026–2027
The published dates are August 22, September 12, October 3, November 7, and December 5, 2026; and March 6, May 1, and June 5, 2027. August and September 2026 have already passed as of this update.
Upcoming registration / late-registration deadlines: October 3 test — September 18 / September 22; November 7 — October 23 / October 27; December 5 — November 20 / November 24; March 6 — February 19 / February 23; May 1 — April 16 / April 20; June 5 — May 21 / May 25. Deadlines expire at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time. Check availability and any changes before booking.
Choose a date that leaves room to prepare
Junior spring can be a practical first-test window if you have learned the relevant material and have time to study. It is not a universal best date. Compare school exams, activities, travel, and your preparation needs.
Use an official Bluebook practice test to identify skills to review. A retake can be useful after additional preparation, but no number of attempts guarantees improvement. There is no general rule that a fourth attempt harms an application.
Check each college’s score deadline
Application and score-receipt deadlines vary. Do not assume November or December results will arrive in time for an early application. Confirm the last accepted test date directly with each institution.
Score Choice and superscoring are separate policies. Some colleges have particular score-reporting requirements. Follow the instructions of every college you apply to rather than assuming you can always omit a test date.
Registration, fees, and devices
Use the exact deadline for your test date rather than a rule such as ‘four weeks before.’ Check current domestic or international fees on the official registration pages.
If you need to borrow a device from College Board, request it at least 30 days before test day. Accommodations have their own approval process; begin that process early.
A flexible high-school timeline
In sophomore year, focus on your courses and use the PSAT 10 in spring if your school offers it. The PSAT/NMSQT is a fall test. Ask your school which assessment you will take.
In junior year, identify target colleges and build a manageable study schedule. Choose an SAT date when ready, leaving time for a retake if needed and if the college deadlines permit it.
